About the Author
Joanne Rowling was born in July 1965 at Yate General Hospital in England. She grew up in Chepstow, Gwent where she went to Wyedean Comphrehensive. Rowling attended Exeter University, where she earned her French and Classics degree, her course including one year in Paris. She moved to London and worked as a researcher at Amnesty International among other jobs. She started writing Harry Potter during a delayed manchester to London's King Cross train journey and, over the next five years, outlined the plots for all the books, and started writing Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. She moved to Northern Portugal, where she taught English as a foreign language. She married in October, 1992 and had a daughter in 1993. When the marriage ended, Rowling and her daughter, Jessica, moved to the UK where the first book was eventually published by Bloomsbury Children's Books in June 1997. Plot
"You're a wizard, Harry," proclaims the burly Hagrid. With that, orphaned Harry Potter discovers his magical heritage as he's whisked to Hogwarts School of Withcraft and Wizardry and meets his new friends, Ron Weasly and Hermione Granger. Harry also encounters the evil Lord Voldemort, who has taken over the body of a Hogwarts professor in the first book. In Harry's second year, he uncovers more about Lord Voldemort through the diary of Tom Riddle. The diary, containing a piece of Voldemort's soul, possesses Ron's sister, Ginny. And to save her, Harry must battle a giant snake, the Basilisk. In Harry's third year, Sirius Black, the man jailed for the death of Harry's parents escapes from Azkaban's prison, seemingly determined to kill Harry. Soon, Harry discovers the truth about his parent's deaths as well as learning about the evil dementors and the secret identity of his kindly professor, Remus Lupin. In his fourth year, Harry, to his surprise, is entered in the Triwizard Tournament, where he must face a dragon, swim with ghastly mermaids, and navigate a treacherous maze. In Harry's fifth year, Dumbledore, branded as a liar by the Ministry of Magic is taken to Azkaban prison, and Harry forms Dumbledore's army to reveal Voldemort's presence to the magical world. In his sixth year, Harry learns from Professor Dumbledore about the early life of Voldemort.
